Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling?

Counselling provides a confidential space to talk about your experiences, thoughts and feelings. It is not about giving advice, diagnosing problems, or telling you what to do. Working collaboratively, we can explore what is happening for you, develop understanding, and consider possible ways forward.

What can I expect from my first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, talk about what has brought you to counselling, and consider what you would like support with. We will discuss how we work, answer any questions you have, and make sure counselling feels like the right fit for you.

How often would I attend counselling?

The frequency of sessions depends on your individual circumstances and what works best for you. Many clients choose to attend weekly, particularly when beginning counselling, while others prefer fortnightly sessions. We can discuss what feels appropriate for you.

How do I know if counselling is working?

Counselling is a personal process, and progress can look different for everyone. Some people notice changes in how they understand themselves, their feelings, or their responses to situations. Others find that having a space to reflect and talk things through is valuable in itself. We can review together whether counselling continues to feel helpful and relevant for you.

Is counselling confidential?

Counselling is confidential, which means that what you discuss in sessions will not be shared without your consent. There are some exceptions, such as situations where there is a serious concern about someone’s safety or where we are required to share information by law. These limits will be explained before you begin counselling.
